JERUSALEM, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The number of Israelis who received the third doses of COVID-19 vaccines surpassed 3 million on Friday, the Israeli Ministry of Health announced in a statement.
The number of people vaccinated with the booster jabs reached 3,008,511, or 32 percent of the country's population, it said.
Israel launched its third-dose vaccination campaign on Aug. 1 amid a surge in COVID-19 morbidity in the country.
The third vaccine dose increases the immune protection from infection tenfold, the health ministry said on Thursday. The tenfold protection is compared to those who received only two doses at least five months ago.
The number of people who have received the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines in Israel reached nearly 6.06 million, or 64.5 percent of its total population, while over 5.57 million have taken two doses.
