JERUSALEM, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chief of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) air force visited Israel on Monday and attended a large-scale international air combat exercise.

Commander of the UAE Air Force, Ibrahim Nasser Mohammed Al Alawi, was welcomed at the Palmachim Air Force Base in southern Israel by an honor guard led by the Commander of the Israeli Air Force, Amikam Norkin, the Israeli military said in a statement.

Al Alawi attended the "Blue Flag" exercise, a two-week-long drill with air forces from eight countries, as an observer, the army said.

"The commanders discussed developing cooperation and strengthening relations between the two air forces," the statement read.

Norkin thanked Al Alawi for the visit. "This is a truly historic day with tremendous significance for the future of cooperation between our air forces," Norkin told Al Alwi, according to the statement.

Ties between Israel and the UAE have been enhanced since the U.S.-brokered normalization deal was signed between the two countries in September 2020.
